Best way to stop running bamboo from, well, running?

I'm thinking of planting some bamboo for constructive and decorative purposes, I was looking at getting the clumping variety, but none are big enough for building or other uses, so I'm forced into getting running. the problem with that is that I don't want them to spread like a plague in my area, so what do I do to contain it? what are my choices?
