How necessary is it for a smartphone to have a protective case around it?

lots of people have them, they seem primarily decorative what with the graphics on them, but do they really offer any real protection? If you drop a smartphone with a case on it, is it really more likely to survive real damage than if it didn't have one? does your personal experience bear this out either way?
